This summer I decided to start making small changes to avoid the usual struggle I face when summer comes around. Here are some great ways to stay on track that I personally have implemented in my summer plans.
5 Tips To Stay Fit and Healthy During Summer
1.Stay hydrated- Water is a great way to cleanse the body and function more efficiently. Make sure that you are drinking at least 16 ounces of water before, during and after activities. Even on road trips, make sure you are reaching for the H20 and avoid the sodas. Caffeine can dehydrate the body and occurs even faster in warmer weather.
2. Find a positive support system- Getting back into shape can be a struggle in itself and can be even harder when you are the only one. Find friends and family members that actively support you in your journey. Tell them about your goals and have them help you stay accountable. Explain to them the importance of your goals so that they respect your decisions.
3. Find a program that works for you and stick to it-Starting a new health and fitness plan can be difficult. It takes time, trial and error. What helps is to find a system that works for you. To find a program that grows as you grow. Establish a plan, write down your goals and set dates to achieve those goals. Tracking your progress is a great way to see if your efforts are working or where you need to make changes.
4. Eat small meals throughout the day- Summertime is a struggle for me nutritionally. I don't like to eat when it's hot. The last thing I want to do it eat hot food when it's 95 degrees out. What I have learned to do, is eat smaller meals. I have found that eating salads with proteins such as chicken and shrimp are very beneficial. I also snack on raw veggies, fruits and hummus between the bigger meals. This way I am fuller longer and don't avoid eating.
5. Get creative with your workouts- Take your workout outside. Utilize being in the sun while getting your workout in. I like to take my bike anywhere I can go, grocery stores, pharmacies, small errands. I love being able to waste less money on gas and spending more time outside. Find fun ways to burn those calories by swimming, biking, hiking or jogging.
Tips When Traveling
1. Eat before the airport- Eat a big meal before heading to the airport. This will help you avoid the fast food lines an pricey snacks. If you forget your plan and have to eat there, then find a good grilled salad or even a fruit salad.
2. Watch out for jet-lag- Adjusting to new time zones can be difficult, it can leave you out of sorts and fatigued. It can also leave you feeling hungry at random times. Avoid the urge to snack at 4am to help you develop a new system in your new area. Wait for normal meal times. If you feel you cannot wait then at least find a healthy snack, fruit, raw veggies or raw nuts.
3. Plan your meals and save space for treats- When you know you are going to an area that is known for their delicious treats then plan accordingly. Make sure you are sticking to your healthy plan throughout the day so when it's time to eat that crepe or delicious pastry there is no guilt involved.
4. Watch the alcohol- Drinking can go hand in hand with traveling. So if you are heading out to a happy hour think before you drink. Clear liquors are more easily digested and better for the body. Drink a glass of water in between drinks to allow your body to slowly process the sugar. Take your time and sip slow.
5. Skip the drive-thru and try the food market- Skip the drive-thrus when traveling. Drive-thrus are tricky because you may think you are picking a healthy option but then you are packing on the calories. Avoid the drive-thru and find a food market. Markets are a great way to try local goods while staying on track. Usually, the food here is fresh and better for you. It doesn't hurt to help someone local out either.
Hope these tips help you to stay on track while still enjoying your summer!
