Mantra Monday: 10 Tips to Starting a New Lifestyle

Happy New Year friends! If you're like me, you've scrolled through social media and there is a lot of reminiscing of the last year and a lot of resolutions and claims to making this year the ultimate of years! With that comes change in order to achieve those goals. In order to make small changes to yield big results, we must implement the things we have learned!

So...how do we go about making everyday changes that will enable us to achieve our greatest year yet? Here's 10 tips for small ways to yield big results!

Tip #1: REMIX
Yes....music my friends can be a huge motivating factor into achieving your personal goals in fitness. Playlists can be epic for results! Music and their beats per minute are actually a necessary partnership to success. Faster, upbeat tunes, can really pump you up! Take time to make playlists according to the type of workout you are looking to do so you are always prepared!

Tip #2: Exercise & Watch TV
It's the time of the year where are favorite shows return and new ones develop. If you're like me, a busy professional, actually sitting down when the show is on is almost impossible. Instead, I complete my workout at home while I stream one of my shows. If on a rare occasion, I actually sit down to watch a show, I take commercial breaks to do plank challenges, ab workouts or even push ups. It's fun to challenge yourself each commercial to get one more repetition in!

Tip #3: Sleep....yes!
Sleep is crucial for the optimal functioning of our bodies, yet we tend to sacrifice it work deadlines. Sleep also plays a key role in weight-loss. It helps you feel less hungry, gives you more energy and helps to reduce stress (who wouldn't benefit from that!?) Make a sleep schedule and stick to it. When the time comes, wind down, turn off the electronics and sleep.

Tip #4: Skip the soda
Yes....take a moment, let it sink it, but that 3 diet coke a day is not helping you achieve any goals. Instead start replacing one of your carbonated beverages with a glass of water a day. Or try something new like an unsweetened beverage like tea. If you are someone who needs flavor, utilize an infuser water bottle with fresh fruit. Let it sit over night and the next day you'll have flavor without the added calories from preservatives and sugars.

Tip #5: Reward Yourself
This sounds fun huh? When you achieve one of your goals or resolutions for the year, do something good for yourself. Skip the food reward and upgrade! I'm talking real rewards, new fitness gear, a fun perfume, a new outfit, heck even those awesome Nike's or heels you've been eyeing up! A little retail therapy not only is fun but doesn't pack on the extra calories from the food rewards we tend to treat ourselves with!

Tip #6: Active Recovery
Whether you go to your local park for a walk, or take a yoga class, it can help get you started on the right track and remove yourself from a stressful work environment. If you have a busy work schedule and taking a break is difficult, break it up. Take the stairs and skip the elevator. Get up from your desk and take a lap around the office. Make it manageable for you!
Tip #7: Eat With Intention
Instead of just reaching for that handy bag of chips in the vending machine, eat mindfully. Focus on what you eat instead of sitting in front of a TV or quickly swallowing your meal on your lunch break. When you sit down for a meal, be present in that moment. Put your phone down, turn off the TV and enjoy your meal. Take small bites, properly chew your food and enjoy it.

Tip #8: Up Your Carb Game
Yes...you can have your carbs AND eat them too! Take away those refined carbs, and implement whole grains. Whole grains have more fiber and protein so it takes your body longer to digest.  Thus you are fuller longer. Simple swaps like sweet potatoes, brown rice, and quinoa are great substitutes! If you're a fan of pasta, try using zucchini and squash to make veggie noodles!

Tip #9: Taste the Rainbow
Check out your plate before you go to sit down. Notice a pattern? How many colors are on your plate? Taste the rainbow means adding more color (fruits and veggies). My favorite go tos are kale, red peppers, blueberries, strawberries....reds, greens, blues ect. Find a healthy balance to energize your busy day!

Tip #10: Establish a Healthy Mentality
So often we focus on our bodies, we focus on abs, thigh gaps and toned arms but to truly live a healthier more fulfilled life we have to truly establish strength. Too often we forget about our mental strength, we forget that positive vibes equal a positive life. Take time, 10 to 15 minutes a day to read a personal development book. If you're like me, you have a long commute, so I've found podcasts and audible books very beneficial. Personal favorites of mine are listed below!
1. You Are A Badass- Jen Sincero
2. Present Over Perfect- Shauna Niequist
3. The Universe Has Your Back- Gabrielle Bernstein
4. Girl Code- Cara Alwill Leyba
5. The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck- Sarah Knight
6. The 12 Week Year- Brian P Moran
7. Be Humble. Stay Hungry. Always Hustle- Brad Lomenick
8. The Energy Bus- Jon Gordon
9. Crush It- Gary Vaynerchuk
10. Start With Why- Simon Sinek

Mantra Monday: Don't Let the Start Stop You

Real Talk: I've played sports my entire life, legit since I was five I've been athletic, the tom boy. I always found fitness fun, I know right, gag me huh? But it's because fitness was an outlet, a positive addition to an always chaotic lifestyle. I found when life was overwhelming, or when my job was too stressful, I would got to the gym or take a class. For that one hour of class or two hours at the gym, there was silence, I was focused.

But life tends to happen, a lot lately, and I found myself out of shape, over weight and my doctor telling me I was borderline pre-diabetic. I didn't recognize myself in the mirror anymore. I was tired all of the time, I was short of breathe and irritable. I found my life had been turned upside down and when I walked into the gym instead of enjoyment there was fear. I would walk in, start with cardio and walk right back out. I just couldn't do it anymore. I couldn't be that person.

Anxiety had overcome me. I was tired and my love of fitness went from being enjoyable to fearful. I started to negate my nutrition and made excuses. I was working seven days a week, I was tired, it was winter, it was cold. But I knew in my heart these were just excuses. There's always someone busier than me getting it done, and I knew that, but I tried to justify my actions or lack there of. Eventually, I had to make a choice, I had to choose my health or a lifetime of problems but I knew I couldn't do it the same way again.

So after seeing post after post and being invited to an online challenge group. I gave an at home fitness program called 21 Day Fix a try. It truly changed the way I saw myself and my health. It went from dragging myself to a gym after work to rolling out of bed and working out in whatever I had on. The gym was wherever I was. The workouts were simple 30 minutes a day and the nutritional plan was so basic. It had containers and you just filled the containers and ate. It couldn't be more simple.

But the fear or failure was still there and it took me the first week of still sitting on the couch eating gummy bears not getting results to finally get on board and join these amazing women who were being so supportive. So how did I over come this fear? How do you get back up and get started?

Here's 5 tips I hope that help you so you don't allow the start to stop you too!

1. Fear of looking funny or bad in public: Problem Solved with Beachbody On-Demand: I'm sure if you've ever been to a gym or a class you see the flawless looking girls with so much coordination and when you try to complete the exercises they are doing....it's well awkward. It can be hard to workout at gym especially if you are knew. The great part about working out at home is that there is no judgment. You can't be late to class and there is no rush after work.

Now we have an all access pass to every program ever created and now you gain access to every program coming in the new year--> All Access Challenge Pack. You even gain access to an awesome app to track your progress for free!

2. Fear of being overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the gym: If you're like me, being overly stimulated when you're trying to start something new can be difficult. Between the loud music, bright lights and intensity from others being competitive that can turn you off big time. If you're taking a class and all you can do is stare, then not only will your form lack but so will the results. Try utilizing noise canceling headphones that will enable you to tune everyone out. Utilize an app on your phone or the TV on the treadmill to reduce your anxiety and keep your focus.

3. Fear of Failure: Join a challenge group: So often our society is about quick fixes, fad diets and guaranteeing results without actually working for them. As a result, when we decide that it's time to make a change in our lifestyle we become afraid of failure. When you take your health into your own hands, you are responsible for the results. It's easy when you take pills, don wraps, you can blame the products but when it's you, failure is a real fear. The best way to overcome this fear is to own it and overcome it head on.

Personally, I love the challenge groups I run because we help establish your health and fitness goals, together be form plans, and you have the accountability of the group so that you have the support and motivation many people are lacking to get started. It's like having a virtual workout buddy 24/7. Anytime you need support, guidance or have a question, your accountability group is there.

Failure, it's part of reality, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. Failure can be beautiful because from failure you learn, grow and achieve a higher level of success. It's what happens after you have failed that determines your level of success. You can rise above, start again, or continue to always be someone who makes excuses and tries to validate them. But if you are like me, that just leaves you with great disappointment and even farther from your initial goals.

4. Exercise brings anxiety: try a mind/body class: As someone who has anxiety, on my most stressful days, things like yoga enable me to relax and establish a calmer mindset to overcome any difficulties I am experiencing. Yoga is beneficial because it doesn't focus solely on the physical aspect of health and wellness but the mental aspect as well. It establishes a healing from the inside out. The flow of the class brings an empowerment that can enable you to no longer fear exercise.

If you don't have a yoga studio or would like to try yoga prior to joining a studio, we offer a 3 Week Yoga Retreat where three yoga experts take you through the fundamentals and foundations of yoga, all in the comfort of your own home. You can breathe, stretch and work yourself to a physical and mental strength you've never achieved before. If you'd like more info or want to try it out for free you can email me at: ginamariefit@gmail.com

5. Fear of boredom: Find a workout that is fun and enjoyable: One of the best parts about fitness now is that is has gone from weights and treadmills to a diverse variety that can be any physical level. For some, exercise has to be fun to shift the mindset from being forced to participate in daily activity, to actually enjoying working out. If you're someone who doesn't enjoy typical workouts, you hate treadmills and weights try a cardio dance workout. Do you like hip hop? Try Cize. Do you like country music? Try Country Heat. Finding something you enjoy while receiving the benefits for your body truly becomes epic for health and fitness goals. Workouts don't have to be done inside a gym now you can take it outside, workout in your home or even a park!

Things I wish someone would have told me when you lose your friend to cancer

On this day.
One year ago exactly.
I was sitting on a comfy couch.
I had an adorable little boy fast asleep on my lap.
My rock, the person who became my best friend, was sitting in her recliner to my right.
She was wrapped in her favorite blanket.

We were talking.
We always had the best girl chats late at night.
But this time, our conversation, was about me.
My anxiety was raging. I was anxious all of the time.
She was the only one who knew the level I was struggling at.

She always had a way of knowing what you needed far before you did.
She blatantly told me that only time she saw me happy was in two places.
The first at home with our families.
The second with my coach friends.

She wasn't wrong....it's true I am not happy being away from my loved ones.
Being a traveler isn't a glamorous lifestyle.
It's actually prevented me from major life decisions and choices.
But what she said next, I've carried close to my heart every single day.

She said, "Gina, this coach thing, it's for you."
She continued, "It's time to take it seriously, you're going to do something big."
She ended it the only way she could, "Get a damn business page and get on it."
My friend was dying and she took time to tell me she believed in me....

Our last private conversation, was about me, something I felt so selfish for.
But she wouldn't have it any other way.
She was fighting harder than ever and she just wanted to feel "normal."

It tears me apart knowing that a year later these conversations are held at a cemetery.
When I go to her for advice, I look at a headstone with her beautiful face.
We knew, we weren't naive. Her fight was intensifying.
But the hope never faded even in her final moments.

[My Position]

This year has been hell, there's no pleasant, kind or gentle way to say that when you lose someone who was a pivotal part of your existence you're never the same again no matter what someone tells you. There's major adjustments, there's a lot of anger along with a roller-coaster of emotions you may not have even known you were capable to experiencing. But you're forced to. On any given day, a scent,  a picture, a quote, or a passerby can evoke the most unpleasant of these emotions.

In this year, a significant amount of people have told me about their loved ones, they've told me their stories of painful losses, their experiences, their effect and most importantly their love for that person. If you would ask me if I would have ever known this would be my position, the inspirer to those who've lost loved ones and the person to help them establish lifelong memories so they never have to forget these beautiful moments sitting on a couch...I would never have known.

But that's me. I inspire strength in others because of pain. It's not an easy path or position. Some people meet it with resistance, others are still figuring our their foundation. It's one of those things that doesn't have a time frame. You cannot tell someone in a year or even five years that they'll "be okay" because that's not your place to decide. Grief leaves you with a forever timeline, a timeline that for the rest of your life you will face. It doesn't get easier, and for every person who tells me that I just kindly say, "thank you." It never get easier watching your world become shattered, what does occur is an adjustment over time.

The person you were doesn't exist, but over time, for me, it's forced me into this position, the position I was destined to be in even if I still question my strength on my weakest days. To think my course of life was so greatly affected in the most positive and compassionate ways because of my beautiful hero enables me to be more resilient than ever. On the days I want to quit, I push, the workout I don't feel like doing, I do, because I know someone out there needs me as much as I need them.

[Google Definitions]

In the beginning, I would search Google for articles, steps and pathways on how one handles a loss like this. Honestly, they were all the same. Article after article talked about how you always remember you're not alone, that the person you've lost is always with you, respect the pain...blah, blah, honestly, blah. In the midst of the pain raging inside, the last thing a person who is grieving needs to hear is another bland statement. Yes, we know you're trying to be kind, but when you haven't experienced this kind of loss, it's impossible to truly understand.

[Your friendship--> It did matter.]

If you're not as fortunate as I was, your boss may not be understanding about your loss because it was a friend, not a family member. But the reality is she was family, her family became my family, and I respected her and them as family. To some a friend doesn't carry as much importance as family, but that's where society is wrong. We do not live in a traditional world where everyone has siblings, grandparents or even parents for that matter. So for those of us who know loss, our friends do become family, they become a crucial part of our existence. No one has to validate your friend's importance in your life and no one has the right to question that loss. Period.

[Relationships--> They're going to change]

When you lose a friend, in my particular situation, too young to cancer, it leaves you in a place where support is necessary but is not always found in the manner you may need. It's hard for those remaining in your life to understand if they haven't experienced this same loss. They respect your loved one, they support you and want to be there for you. For the ones who aren't experiencing the grieving process, they may distance themselves. For your fellow friends who are also hurting, it can be difficult to be there for each other and you may experience your grief in very different ways. No matter their responses, it's incredibly important to make an effort to maintain relationships. Offer your support to your fellow friends, even a simple text message can mean the world. It's easy to feel alone in this scenario even if you're surrounded by caring people. So be kind to others.

[Feeling Alone]

When you lose your rock, your go to person for life, the person you go to for breakups, family problems, work troubles, financial stress, illness and loss....that person is suddenly gone. It's going to make you feel alone, desperate even for comfort and compassion. Devastation is a common feeling. If you're like me, you're a person of routine and you're going to find yourself calling or texting them...and mid-dial the tears stream down your face. It's more than adjustment, it feels like a different life. It's okay if you need space, have to pull back and give yourself time. You have every right to feel the way you feel and deserve the time to properly grief. Don't let alone tell you differently.

[Mortality]

Weird, right? But honestly not really. When you experience a loss of a friend, especially so young, you start thinking about death. It may makes you feel self-involved, but that's not the case. We tend to surround ourselves with people who are similar to us. So it's normal to actually thing about this. Our time is truly not ours, we won't know where, or when, on what day or what time. That's not for us to know, so when you lose a friend it can force you to live a more fulfilled life or live in fear. So live in fulfillment, they would want you to.

[So...now what?]

You're probably wondering what the hell, now what, this did not make me feel better. When I started to respect the fact that I wasn't going to wake up and "just feel better" the true process of grieving started. With that came a wave of emotions, situations I formed in my head and eventually gaining the courage to return back to the places that were special.

[People]

People will say stupid things. People will say incredibly impactful things. Be gentle. It's incredibly hard to be the friend, family member, significant other of someone who just lost their young friend to cancer. People are going to try, really hard if you're lucky like me, to comfort you with food, feelings, blanket statements and kindness. Let them. It's not your job to make them feel better, you're grieving, but they're going to help you in more ways than you know. They know your situation, let them in... even if it's a little.

[Buckle Up: You're going for a ride]

Death brings out the best and worse in people, it's painful to think that loss can actually break further relationships apart, but it does happen. Closure, in my opinion, doesn't exist, it took me a long time to swallow that reality and it burned on the way down. Your grieving process does not have a timeline. Take your time. Be gentle with yourself and your heart. Guilt is normal. Anger is normal. Depression is normal. You will always want more time, wish you would have sent that message, made that phone call, stopped over one more time. But your person knows that you gave your all and they are grateful.

Faith, it may fade, strengthen or disappear. It's incredibly painful to justify how someone could fight so hard, and in the need this is the reality. The beauty in faith is that it's meant to be questioned. It's okay to talk with your God, higher power, whatever your belief system is and request strength. It took me a long time to get the courage to walk back into the church where my friend's funeral was had.

Am I crazy? Find yourself saying this? Laugh, it's okay, you're not. Your life just drastically changed. Know that you're still there, a part of you is gone and that can make you feel insane. If you start to question your purpose, your passion, your life, know that the person you went to for advice will always be with you, just reach out, they'll send signs.

Holidays & milestones- they force you to remember your last ones with your friend. My friend passed right before Christmas, it makes the season bittersweet. It makes me replay our final weeks, days and minutes. Grief will trigger. Emotional outbursts will occur. Let it out. Do not allow yourself to hold in the pain for too long. Things will never be the same and in my opinion they never should, that person was a huge part of your life and they will always impact it and your decisions.

[Acceptance and Peace]

Yes, they do exist. "Life is a process of becoming. A combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death.” ~Anais Nin

Coping with the forced loss of  loved one is incredibly difficult. Initially your sense of peace, comfort and your purpose will seem distorted. The future may not be what you expected and you may find yourself longing for a past that no longer is present. At first, you may you may focus on the loss and everything that went with it. The possibilities that seemed endless, the experiences you felt they deserved, and in my friend's case the family including her son she had to leave...they may cloud your focus and anger you.

As this journey with grief continues, I have learned that my friend and I am sure the person you lost you already know isn't gone they have just changed. They are there, they become the sun on a rainy important day, they become the cardinal sitting on the branch while you visit at the cemetery, they become the new friend you didn't even know you needed. Life is a constant change, we at times meet with resistance, we found comfort in their existence and now find pain and uncertainty.

Change, we must. Nothing is ever lost in this universe. Our friend is now our energy. They are present and can be intensified by respecting their wishes, remembering them at milestones and holidays and living with kindness and selflessness (if your friend is as amazing as mine). Peace is being found in knowing that the life lessons my friend taught me, the people she has brought into my life and the improved reality as a result of our friendship forever lives.

Nothing will change the situation, there is no power in us to bring them back. Instead we are forced to cope, change with the situations and forever live fulfilled with each day we are blessed. If you have lost someone, know they are not gone, their presence has changed, but they are here. Instead of dreaming about the things I wished we could have done, I talk about her, I tell stories and I remember the principles she lived her life by and incorporate them in mine.

Forever, I am grateful, to have found someone so amazing and for the time we had to truly have been blessed by a living angel, no amount of pain will ever take my love or her memory away.
